Pupil Premium and Recovery Premium

At The Wells Academy we exist to provide our students with an education that allows them to live a life of meaning and purpose.

By the end of their time with us, we want each of our students to be equipped with the knowledge, character and qualifications required to make a positive and lasting contribution to their family, community and the world.

We understand that for some students, there are barriers to their engagement in education and it is our aim through high quality pastoral support, high aspirations for all and an ambitious curriculum to enable all students to succeed, regardless of any economic disadvantage.

Our Pupil Premium Strategy Statement sets out some of the key challenges we know our students face, and how we aim to utilise the current government funding available to us to try and ensure early identification of barriers and needs are recognised. This will ensure that all students can engage fully in their education and leave with the best possible outcomes that will enable them to thrive as an adult in the wider community.

1. Literacy

2. Overall attainment

3. Wellbeing, emotional regulation and self-confidence

4. Cultural Capital and Enrichment.

5. Absence and Persistence Absence (PA)

In addition, our strategy is based upon the principles set out by the EEF; a tiered approach which begins in the classroom with high quality adaptive teaching. The second tier is focused on targeted academic support and the third tier is about wider strategies which will improve students’ self-esteem and character, thereby further reducing absence and improving outcomes. This three-year strategy is focused on embedding long-term, sustainable change and is responsive to both individual students’ needs based on robust diagnostic assessment, but also more general strategies that benefit all students.

We will also endeavour to consider the challenges faced by wider cohorts of vulnerable students, such as those who have at present, or have ever had, a social worker, those with parents in the armed forces and also young carers. The activities we have outlined in this statement are also intended to support their needs, regardless of whether they are disadvantaged or not.

This strategy is at the heart of our wider academy improvement planning, and is a key tool through which all leaders continue to promote a culture of high expectations, to empower disadvantaged students to have high ambitions for themselves.
